The Teachers as Researchers program: a citizen science project to address educational challenges

To be effective, educators need to collaborate and build upon each other’s successes and failures. However, collaboratively producing evidence about their practices, aggregating and testing it is challenging because of the complexity of educational challenges, practices and contexts.

Since May 2019 we are developing and implementing the Teachers as Researchers program (TaR-program) in France, a citizen science framework to engage educators in the production of an ever-evolving database of practice-based evidence on how to best address the many challenges of education. Educators - teachers, teacher trainers, school staff, etc.- create communities that regularly meet during workshops to collaboratively define objectives and hypotheses to test, and collect, analyse and synthesize contextualised evidence. During 2020-2021, 168 educators from primary school to university published in an open digital repository evidence on how they addressed 35 educational challenges on thematics such as students’ emotions and distance learning.

During this presentation, we will describe the TaR-program and report some results about its implementation and impact in the 2020-2021 cohort.
