The AIRE-LiSc Master will host Pierre Legrain, Research Director at the Neuroscience department of Institut Pasteur and former president of the Human Proteome Organization (HPO), since its inception in 2001, following the publication of the Human Genome. His major scientific interest turns on Systems Biology and he is currently developing the Intermuse project, dealing with the transmission of cognitive abilities associated with musical communication.
Interdisciplinary research in systemic biology and cognitive sciences : Is it possible to discriminate between biological and cultural transmission?
During the first part of the presentation I’ll discuss specificities of biological complex systems. I’ll show why I consider necessary adopting an interdisciplinary approach to address many unsolved biological questions. In the second part, I’ll present my research project on the perception of significant sounds. I’ll show our first results on the recognition of notes’ pitch by musicians. The cognitive processes in action illustrate the idiosyncratic nature of our mental processes, still supported by common generic architecture. From these observations, we try to experimentally dissect the processes and discriminate between what is commonly named innate or acquired traits.
