IT seminar: The Mechanobiology of cell wall growth in filamentous fungi

Speaker: Louis Chevalier

Abstract:

To date, the mechanisms which control cellular growth remains poorly understood. To study it, we used filamentous fungi, which grow by expanding their cell wall (CW), a thin and stiff sugar-made layer encasing the plasma membrane. By exploiting the very rapid polar growth speeds of fungal hyphae, we here begin to document the dynamics of CW assembly and deformation in multiple fungal species, spread across 100 Millions of years of evolution. Using Aspergillus nidulans and Candida albicans, we computed spatio-temporal patterns of CW bulk elastic modulus and thickness dynamically, using a suite of sub-resolution imaging method.
